I'll need you!

Posted by Christoph

Tomorrow I'm finally leaving for Canada.
Well, that's not quite true. Tomorrow I'll leave for Brussels, because that's where we meet. A couple of days later, I'll be leaving for Canada.
I'm taking part in a study tour, if you want to read a bit more about it click here.

That's why I will need you!
I will need you to pray for me because I'm scared.
I'm scared because I know it's going to be exhausting, because I know that my body could react poorly to the constant walking, moving, carrying stuff.
I'm scared because deep down, I don't like to ask for help.
Whatever God you believe in, whether you believe at all, thank you for each prayer, every good thought and thank you for your friendship. Your support helps me do this.

I found a good prayer that you might pray with me:

You who sit down in the High God’s presence,
spend the night in Shaddai’s shadow,
Say this: “God, you’re my refuge,
I trust in you and I’m safe!
That’s right—he rescues you from hidden traps,
shields you from deadly hazards.
His huge outstretched arms protect you—
under them you’re perfectly safe;
his arms fend off all harm.
He ordered his angels
to guard you wherever you go.
If you stumble, they’ll catch you;

their job is to keep you from falling.
Psalm 91

See you in a couple weeks :)
I'll try to give an update in between, I just can't promise anything at all.

Pause for Thought: Snow

Posted by Christoph

Some of you might be thinking now: Snow in August? Where for the love of God are you?
If you're a frequent reader however you might be able to recall my quoting a book called "Snow" a while ago. It's a book by Orhan Pamuk that a friend gave to me and I can recommend reading it, even though I continue to have mixed feelings about it.
It is so full of insight into Turkish culture and its difficulties in relating to the west, full of unmasked and unromanticised human interaction, full of interesting quotes, so much that I can't help but bring them up.
Go ahead and read it if you're looking for a new book to read. I'm pretty sure you won't regret it ;)

You don't need to know much of the storyline for this one. There is this young religious boy Necip who helps the main character in one instance and they sort of become friends. Our main character is a writer, a poet to be exact, and has lived in Germany for many years before returning to Turkey.

Anyway, so Necip says:
"A writer should be able to write about anything. If I were a writer I'd like to write about everything that people didn't talk about."

There is nothing to be added here, is there?
I'd like to talk about things that people usually don't talk about.
Which is why I'm going to bring up this today:

Porn and its ramifications is not really something many people speak about. In fact, that's not entirely true. People seem to have become more and more aware of it, yet still it is a widespread but unfortunately widely ignored topic.
I'm not going into a detailed rant about all of it. The video sums up how porn messes with your head in big and dangerous ways and it'd be better to keep your hands off that stuff. Let's share this one, because it's important.

I'll break another taboo now and tell you that I'm struggling with this. I'm not going to put it in perspective now by bombarding you with statistics of how I'm just a guy and that seems to be what guys do. I don't want to hide behind that.
That video however, does not only speak of destruction and bad habits, it gives hope. A hope of being rewired. And I've experienced healing little by little. I do believe though, that true change can only come with being honest. I'm so scared of being this honest right here and now, but none of us will gain anything from my hiding away the truth. No, only truth will set us free.

The good news is that change is possible. In society and in ourselves.
That is also the 'original' Good News. Jesus came to bring love, justice and righteousness.
He brought it in his death on the cross. Change no longer needs my hopeless endeavors, no, my endeavors have hope, because Jesus already brought change.

6359

Posted by Christoph

6359 means a lot.
It means 6359 times my blog has been read this past year. 6359 times, someone has made the time listen to me going on about anything, really. 6359 times someone has decided to share my life, its joys and its pains. 6359 times, from anywhere in the world, someone has been close to my heart. 6359 times, distance has become nothing more than a word.
6359 times, old friends have hopefully become closer and strangers have been turned into friends.
6359 views ago I went on a great adventure with the goal of discovering myself when I moved to Switzerland. 6359 views ago I was not the person I am now.
6359 means at least 6359 seconds. That is 108 hours or 4,5 days.
6359 is not a lot. But it means a lot to me!
Thank you.

6359 bedeutet vieles.
6359 bedeutet zumindest 6359 Sekunden. Das sind 108 Stunden oder 4,5 Tage.
6359 ist nicht viel. Aber es bedeutet mir Vieles.

Dankeschön.

Just a Dude Talking to Dudes about Love

Posted by Christoph

This is a blog post by one of my favourite writers. I asked him for permission to translate some of his stuff into German and he graciously agreed. Thanks a lot Sammy! If you're reading in English, go get a look at his stuff on www.sammyadebiyi.com!
You can also follow him on Facebook via www.facebook.com/PastorSammyA

Today's post is called 'Just a Dude Talking to Dudes about Love. Click the image above to get there directly.

Der heutige Post heißt 'Just a Dude Talking to Dudes about Love'.

Okay, soweit alles klar?

Gib alles was du hast! (für Singles & Verheiratete)

9. Ruf deine Mutter an.

Jeden Tag wetten tausende Leute, dass du a) wählen wirst. Ich hoffe, du nimmst b).

Das wars Leute. Welchen der Punkte musstest du hören?"

Thanks again Sammy Adebiyi for letting me do this!
Danke Sammy für deine Erlaubnis!

Pause for Thought: Sweat and the Glory of God

Posted by Christoph

Du durchdringest alles;
lass dein schönstes Lichte,
Herr, berühren mein Gesichte.
Wie die zarten Blumen
willig sich entfalten
und der Sonne stille halten,
lass mich so still und froh
deine Strahlen fassen

A lof of things have to do with sweat these days. Due to insane temperatures in Austria a lot of new situations have arisen I believe. I have learned for example that my brain, which isn't used to working in sub-tropical climate will fry and eventually stop working altogether in such heat. Today at work I had the hardest time staying focused in the afternoon, what with around 30° Celsius in the office. Maybe you learned something too, like how your neighbor actually smells, because all use of deodorant has become obsolete. I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying we rush past the point of it working a lot now.

Let's be serious again. This post could also be called "Playing Drums in Heaven Part Two".
Sunday, I've been to yet another worship event - less experimental but nonetheless wonderful and free and I loved it. I had my previous post in mind even though I felt less of a sting - maybe because I wrote about it. Who knew!
Anyway, these thoughts in mind we sang the following lines of a German song. There is supposed to be an English translation by John Wesley, but I couldn't find it, so bear with my unofficial words:

You permeate everything;
let your most beautiful light
touch my face, Lord!
As the fragile flowers unfold,
and wait quietly for the sun;
Let me be as still as them,
take in the beams of your light,
and let you work in me.

What I'm thinking is: Who cares whether I jump, dance, play, sing or do whatever. God is happy with me being as quiet and a flower, as unmoving. I don't know about you, but flowers and trees, creation in general reminds me a lot of how big and wonderful God is.
They are quiet and peaceful worshippers.
So this Sunday I was just standing or sitting there thinking: I'm going to stay here and enjoy God. Flat out enjoy him and grow. Dig my roots deep and take in the rays of his presence, that I need to live as much as flowers need sunlight. Yep, that's what I'll do.
And hopefully, it will point people to Jesus, as much as flowers point me to him.

PS: Back to sweat. Is there any connection to the 'pleasing aroma of knowing Christ' that Paul says we are to people? If so, then let me sweat, because I want to breathe Christ to my surrounding.
